Thoughts
Goodness me, dissident National Geographic - who ever would have thought? I bought a copy of National Geographic’s May 2008 special issue in China, during a three-week visit that month, at a smart bookstore in Zhongshan, a calm and prosperous China city of one million (or five million depending on where you draw the boundary), an hour’s ferry ride from Hong Kong, up the Pearl River Delta. The magazine was plastic sealed. Two double-page sections, one on minorities and the other on politics, were each glued together and needed prising apart, while on page 46, lines 15, 16, and part of 17, of the left hand column, had been excised with heavy black ink, which, if you hold the page against the light, say, “ . . . the Japanese invasion to the Cultural Revolution to the massacre around Tiananmen Square in 1989.”.
