VATIYAKA, VITI LEVU, FIJI, 2001
Saturday, 4 August 2001. It is late afternoon and seventy-eight-year-old Ram Sundar reaches to close a wooden shutter on the house that he shares with his daughter and a grandson. Rajeshwar Dutt, another grandson, spent time in jail after running with the wrong crowd in Suva. When released, his mother sent him to Vatiyaka, to his grandfather and the cutting gang to straighten him out. He lasted a couple of seasons, but finally, after an argument, he left unannounced.
